Note: Review of Advance Readers Copy | Book Releases 3/6/18

Magic is gone but its remnants dwell in the souls of the divÎners who were once destined to become maji; those who would be gifted with powers beyond the reach of any regime. Their dark skin once marked them with a semblance of the power of heaven and earth. It meant beauty, virtue, and love. Now it casts them as the oppressed. Living as the marginalized “maggots” in a kingdom that fears and abhors them. Every day is a battle. Every day could be their last. Still, strength thrives as the children of the fallen maji train and learn to live the way of the staff-protecting those who can’t defend themselves. It is her diligence to this creed that quickly transforms Zélie from the hated to the hunted as her life collides with a runaway princess. A destined encounter that begins her journey to regain that which was taken-magic must be restored!

Tomi Adeyemi has crafted a story that will pull you in, desperately turning the pages for more. It has left me with adrenaline laced blood coursing through my veins in the thick of the action as my heart raced in tandem with Zélie’s. My mind is still reeling with the thrill of the chase and I cannot wait for the next installment in this series. I’ve got my copy on pre-order and have since the fall of 2017. My mailbox eagerly awaits its arrival. I will buy whatever subsequent special editions may follow. You know, the copies that will have those shiny award stickers on them. The movie edition. The audio book, the t-shirts, the bookmarks, the character cards? Come on y’all, what else can we get? The fan art! Don’t even get me started on the beautiful fan art that has been created.

COBBSpeaking of amazing art though, can I just have a moment to gush over the cover? It was the cover reveal (designed by Rich Deas) I saw posted on Twitter by Tomi Adeyemi in late July that first alerted me to this highly anticipated YA release. I responded then with the same sentiment I still carry, saying that it beams with radiant brilliance and gives me life, declaring that, “I am black, I am strong, I am beautiful!” This cover is gorgeous and excellent in every way!

I don’t know that I have ever been as excited for a YA book release as I am right now and I agree with every fiber of my being as Jet has declared it, that “Tomi Adeyemi is about to take both the literature and film world by storm.” Did you catch that? This amazing book received a book deal before it even hit the shelf! I am stoked beyond measure. Pre-order your copy TODAY! That is all.
