My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Perry T. Cook was born and raised for eleven years in a minimum security correctional facility in Surprise, Nebraska, with a mother who he knows to have been convicted of manslaughter.

This is a unique story in that Perry was allowed to live in a correctional facility due to the fact that the warden was able to foster him. To that end, this story on the surface seems unrealistic but it is however distinctly clever at depicting the lives of those who are serving time because they lack the resources to be able to do otherwise.

A school assignment causes him to ask all the right questions and to uncover truths about his mother’s past and those of several of the other residents at Blue Ridge correctional facility. Their stories are candid and need to be told.

This was an excellent book that I would recommend to readers 6th grade and up. You will enjoy getting to know Perry. He is every bit as honorable as the title suggests.
